At the Grand Strand Youth Hockey League, we often hear from parents and skaters curious about whether our rink is open to the public.
This rink is a hub of activity for our league members, where young athletes sharpen their skills and grow their love for the game. However, it's also a popular spot for the wider community to enjoy roller hockey.
To help our members and their families plan their visits, we've put together some key information on the best times to use the rink—whether you're looking for a quieter session to practice or hoping to catch some action with other local players.
The short answer is YES!
The rink, which is located at the corner of Emmens Avenue and Crabtree Lane at Grand Park (Directions Here), is owned by the City of Myrtle Beach and it is open for public use.
In addition to hosting GSYH practices, games and events, we also share the rink with Grand Strand Adult Hockey, which runs an adult roller hockey league 3 seasons per year and organizes pick-up hockey games open to skaters from all over the area.
At any time when the rink is not reserved by our league or the adult league, you are welcome to use the rink for practicing hockey or learning to skate.
The Market Common Rink is available for open for skating every day of the week and is usually wide open for public use most mornings and afternoons during the week. The majority of league activities happen in the evenings.
Below is a list of times that the rink is reserved for league activities and pick-up skates. These are the only times when it is not open to the public.
This list may not be comprehensive as the rink will occasionally be reserved by a group for a specific "one off" skate, but it should give you an idea of when there are reserved rink times. GSYH seasons run from September through December and from January through April.
During times which the rink is open to the public, there are plenty of folks who come and go throughout the day, getting a quick skate in, practicing shooting, etc.
If you see another skater or family using the rink, that does not mean you cannot skate. Our hockey community is very supportive and generally players and participants in both organizations are very welcoming and accommodating of others interested in skating and playing hockey.
Just be polite and use common sense etiquette of asking them which areas they are using and most folks will be happy to share the rink with others or incorporate you into their practice / play.
If you have any questions about the rink, call City of Myrtle Beach Parks & Recreation at 843-918-1185 or visit https://www.myrtlebeachprst.com/
Let the City of Myrtle Beach know that you support the area having a roller rink, by signing our league's petition at Change.org. Our goal is to let area officials know there is a strong and growing hockey community in our area, in order to lobby for future improvements and additions to our facility including a full-time scoreboard and additional amenities.
Grand Strand Youth Hockey is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization devoted to promoting the game of hockey along the Grand Strand.
